What to do if your child is home with Head Lice

Don’t panic. Anyone – adult or youngsters-can get head lice.
Remember, head lice are passed from person to person by direct contact or on shared objects (combs, towels, hats, etc.). Even though many of us have been under the stay-at-home ordinance, head lice develop over some weeks after contact is made. It has nothing to do with cleanliness and does not reflect poorly on you as a parent. The problem can be managed. Just follow the instructions below.

1. Check every member of your family.Home with Lice
Look for any tiny white eggs (nits) on hair shafts, near the scalp, nape of the neck and behind the ears. Head lice are small grayish-tan insects without wings. Any family member with lice or nits must be treated.

2. Use safe and effective head lice treatment.
Several are available in general retail and grocery stores; however, their ingredients consist of harsh chemicals. Lice and nits have become immune to these chemicals, and there is a high chance of scalp irritation of dry skin or a rash. It is best to use products that highlight natural essential oils as a safe and effective treatment.

3. Remove all nits.
Gently comb the child’s hair with the special nit removal comb. These combs are usually offered with lice treatment product kits.

4. Wash clothes, bed linens, and towels.
Use hot water and dry on the hot cycle for at least 20 minutes. Items, not machine washable can be stored in a tightly sealed plastic bag for at least two weeks. Things such as helmets should be similarly bagged and stored.

5. Soak combs, brushes, etc., in soapy hot water.
The hotter, the better, but at least 130°F. Items should be allowed to soak for 5 to 10 minutes.

6. Vacuum everywhere
To make sure the rest of your home is lice-free, you should vacuum, carpets, pillows, mattresses, upholstered furniture, and even your car seats.

Head lice cannot survive without a human host and don’t live on family pets. Choose an effective treatment, and use it as directed. Perform the steps above to eliminate head lice from your home and to help prevent their spread at home.
We hope you are all remaining healthy and safe.
