Myths Busted

Have you scratched your head and thought you might have lice?
If the answer is "YES!", here are a few tips to help you understand how it happens and what to do to about it.

FACT 1: Lice are not related to cleanliness.
These insects prefer clean hair over dirty hair. Go figure, right?!

FACT 2: Anyone can get lice if they are in close contact with someone who has an infestation.

FACT 3: Lice only infects people, not animals. And they cannot hop or fly. Lice can only spread by crawling from one scalp to another.

FACT 4: It is common to get lice from hats, brushes, or combs if used within 24 hrs. However, lice cannot survive off the scalp for that long of a time.

Head lice are most common in young children who go to daycare, preschool, or elementary school. However, high school students and sports team athletes can also come into contact with lice.

Children and students in these categories often play close together with hair-to-hair contact and may share brushes, hats, hair clips, and the like.

Adults who live with children also have a higher risk of getting head lice.

Although lice and their nits are small, they are still visible to the naked eye.
Head lice can be white, brown, or dark gray.

They are most often found in the hair at the back of the neck or behind the ears.

The nits are round or oval specks that attach to hairs near the scalp. If you try to slide the nits off and they won’t budge, chances are you have them and not dandruff.

Lice have evolved and become resistant to many of the over-the-counter (OTC) treatments. The chemicals are harsh to your scalp and health, and only paralyze lice temporarily. These products will not kill lice. You may spend a lot of money and time researching brands, only to have the little critters reappear a week later.

The above 'treatment comparisons' chart is a snapshot to help you learn which procedure is best for you and your family.
